Chapter 11

The halls were quiet as we made our way to the library. I rapped on the solid door, and Lilith called for us to come in.

“Hello,” she said, a tired smile flitting across her lips. “I just processed Isadoraqz. She’s not pleased with you, or with any of the establishment as she calls us. Did you have any other problems? Did you learn anything? I assume because you’re standing here that you didn’t glean any new information.”

We took turns briefing her, and when we finished, she steepled her long fingers in front of her. Stu wobbled over.

“I hate to be the one to point out the obvious, but they knew we were coming. That’s a problem.”

Lilith cast a glance at him. “And how, exactly, do you think they knew?”

He shrugged a hairy shoulder. “There are only three ways they could have known. They saw them coming, somebody here is a spy, or this place is bugged.”

“Impossible,” she snapped. “There’s no way this place is bugged. We have so many enchantments in place that you might as well put that out of your head.”

He took a sip of bourbon and swirled it in his mouth before swallowing. “Then that only leaves the other two options. Do you two think they saw you coming?”

I shook my head. “It’s unlikely.”

Oliver explained.

“Then that only leaves one probable way that they knew.”

“I refuse to believe it,” Lilith said. “The only two people without a direct risk in this operation are Michael Maganti, whom I’ve known for years, and Devin. That is an equally unpalatable possibility.”

“Yeah, well just because it doesn’t warm your heart don’t make it impossible, toots.”

She shot him a glare, and he backslid. “Ma’am, I mean.”

“At this point, the damage is done,” I said, making a snap decision. “We don’t know how they knew about that, but we have to make sure they don’t find out anything else. From this point forward, we brief nobody on what we’re doing or what we learn. Speaking of, did my sister learn anything?”

Lilith nodded. “She did, actually. She got a glimpse of people. Lots of people. And a piece of a sign. She only got the first few letters, though. C-O-N-S.”

“Okay,” I said, pulling out the tracking map and spreading it on her desk. I pointed at the area where the end of the trail bled into a balloon-shaped area. We need to see if there’s a place that starts with that near here. Was it a street sign? Something on a building? Construction, Consumer, Constant ...”

“She said it was free-standing sort of in the woods, and that she also got a glimpse of a footbridge crossing what looked like some sort of swamp or pond.” I pulled out my phone and swore when I realized it was dead. I hadn’t charged it the night before, and with everything that had gone down, I’d forgotten about it.

“I need my charger. And my laptop,” I said. It would be much faster to search multiple places with it than with my phone.
